Green tram tracks deliver triple value: heat island mitigation, surface water attenuation, and biodiversity gain — all from a substrate and planting intervention that also reduces maintenance costs. The substrate must be replaced every 2–5 years but costs are comparable to conventional track maintenance.
Berlin's BVG tram network has progressively installed grass and vegetation cover on tram track corridors as a nature-based adaptation to urban heat and surface water flooding. The grass substrate cools the urban microclimate through evapotranspiration, reduces surface water runoff, and improves air quality — all while reducing track maintenance noise. Mandated by Berlin's Energy Turnaround Act 2016 and the Berlin Energy and Climate Programme 2030.
