Grass die-off at Heathrow in 2020 created operational disruptions (dust, bird strike, fire risk) that would have cost far more than the grass replacement programme. Proactive species switching ahead of the next heatwave is a low-cost, high-certainty adaptation.
Following Heathrow's 2020 heatwave (37.8°C) and 2022 record (40.2°C) which killed much of the airfield's grass — creating dust, fire hazard and bird strike risks — Heathrow adopted a deep-rooted fescue/ryegrass mix bred for drought, heat, cold, disease and salt tolerance. Replacing existing grass species over 5–6 years within routine maintenance budgets. Sequesters 8.96 tCO2eq/ha as a co-benefit.
